The St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery with the commissioning of a solar-powered electric system. The work of the hospital was interrupted in May 2023 due to its inability to pay a debt of over 4 million Ghana cedis. With this new empowerment, the hospital can now continue to provide essential medical services without interruptions.

The solar power system was made possible through the generous support of partners who came to the aid of the hospital.
According to Mr. Aiden Ngmenbon, Diocesan Director of Health, “This solar power system will go a long way to help the facility provide uninterrupted healthcare services to the people of this community and beyond.”

The commissioning of the solar power system is a timely intervention, coming after the hospital suffered a setback in May 2023 when it was shut down due to its debt burden. The shutdown led to the tragic deaths of two children who were admitted to the facility. However, with the new solar power system, the hospital can now ensure that critical wards such as the children’s ward, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and maternity ward are powered without interruptions.

The Vicar General of the Damongo Diocese, Rev. Fr. Martin Micheal Muosayir, expressed gratitude to the partners for their generous support.
Speaking on behalf of the Bishop of the Damongo Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Paul Yelezuome Angkyier, Rev. Fr. Muosayir said, “We are grateful for the support of our partners who have made it possible for us to have this solar power system. We pledge to utilize it to serve its purpose and ensure proper maintenance culture.”

The engineer for the project briefed the gathering on the scope of the solar power system, saying it will serve critical areas of the hospital. “The solar power system will power critical wards like the children’s ward, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the maternity ward,” he said. “All powerful machines with higher consumption in the facility will also be powered by the solar,” he added.

The partners who made this project possible include: Nadine Albrecht- Kindermissionswerk, Prof. Alfons Rinchede, Mr. Martin Wilde – Jacob-Christian-Adam Foundation and Nicolai Roerkohl
Their support is a testament to the commitment of the global community to improving healthcare delivery in underserved communities.

The commissioning of the solar power system is a significant milestone in the efforts of the St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital to provide quality healthcare services to the people of Damongo and beyond.
