Damongo Common Fund Saga: NDC Youth Protest Backfires as Mahama Backs MP’s Decisions

President John Dramani Mahama has addressed a recent controversy in the West Gonja Municipality regarding contracts awarded to two NPP members, Alhaji Alhassan Fuseini alias Alhaji Rambo and Hudu Issahaku alias Rass Banku, using the MP’s share of the Common Fund.

Speaking at the Damongo camp prison commissioning ceremony, President Mahama explained that the Common Fund is divided between the MP and MCE, who independently decide on projects and contractors.

The president was responding to placards displayed by the NDC Party youth with inscriptions such as “The MCE contracts have become reward for disloyalty”, “When we needed them, they joined NPP- now they enjoy our sweat”, “MCE’s actions are killing the soul of our great NDC party” among others.

“Permit me to educate you on the Common fund. The common fund is in two folds. The MP and the MCE both have their share of the common funds, and so, both will decide their projects with the funds, and which contractor should execute their projects” he said.

“And so therefore, these two projects you are protesting against, is for the MP (Samuel Abu Jinapor) and he has decided to award it to any contractor, there is no controversy in this. Eligible NDC contractors can also apply to the MCE for his share of the projects” He added.

The President urged West Gonja MCE, Yakubu Yussif Castro, to engage party members on assembly work and governance.
