MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), organized a debate competition for Yabum JHS and Jakpa JHS as part of its 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign under the theme “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.”

The debate centered on the motion: “Teaching boys and girls the same thing about online respect and digital safety will prevent violence.” Yabum JHS, arguing for the motion, emerged victorious with 84 points, while Jakpa JHS scored 74 points. Both schools demonstrated exceptional mastery of the subject, delivering well-researched arguments, confident presentations, and sharp rebuttals that showcased their understanding of digital safety and gender equality.

Participating students received awards in recognition of their efforts, while the headmaster of the winning school, Yabum JHS, was presented with a Samsung tablet.

Mr. Kofi Apeater Odum, GES Director for North Gonja District with oversight responsibility for West Gonja Municipal, chaired the event. ASP Sarpong Kumankumah, Savannah Regional DOVVSU Commander, encouraged students to view the DOVVSU office as a safe space and urged them to report any incidents of domestic violence without fear.

Mr. Ebenezer Terkpeh, Health and Education Portfolio Advisor at MTN Ghana Foundation in Damongo, revealed that MTN is constructing an AI and Robotics Centre at KNUST. He announced that the two schools will be among the first in the region to visit and benefit from the facility upon completion.

Both schools appealed for WiFi connectivity to enhance their ICT learning and access to digital resources.
