Lawyer Mohammed Osman Amin, National president of the Gonjaland Youth Association (GLYA) in his speech said it is necessary to seek the King’s blessings and advice to enable them to have a fruitful exercise since the kingdom belongs to him.

He stated that the committee after receiving the King’s blessing will kick start a consultative engagement with all paramount chiefs starting with chiefs and people of the Bole and Sonyo traditional areas respectively.

“Though not part of this committee, it became necessary to join this team because the GLYA as stakeholders have been involved”, he emphasized.

Business In A Box Project duly launched In The Savannah Region

0

The Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has launched a youth-empowering program known as the Business In a Box (BizBox) project in Damongo in the west Gonja Municipality of the Savannah region.

The program took place at the Daomongo Community Center on 20th February 2024 on the theme; “Empowering the Youth for a Better and Brighter Future”

The Business in a Box project is a scale up of the Young Africa Works Project being implemented in Ghana by the Ghana Enterprises Agency in partnership with Mastercard Foundation to provide youth skills development, access to start-up kits, youth social networks, institutional strengthening, policy, and regulatory support.

In a welcome address, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency Mrs. Kosi Yankey-Ayeh said the BizBox project builds on the successes of the young Africa Works which was implemented from 2020 to 2022 and provided work opportunities to 94,000 youth across the country, therefore, the new intervention is designed to achieve even more by providing skills development, mentoring, and coaching to the youth to have access to markets.

She added that the project is expected to support 250,000 young women and men including the persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with a focus on supporting 125,000 of them with start-up kits to create new businesses, jobs and by extension better the livelihoods of the young people.

Mrs. Yankey-Ayeh also added that the youth are the leaders of change and innovation with the determination to see things through and they only need the chance to demonstrate their skills which the project will provide a comprehensive framework for the youth to succeed as entrepreneurs and contribute to the growth of the region and Ghana’s economy.

The CEO further said that the BizBox project gives 70 percent benefit to women and 10 percent to the PWDs.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril in addressing the gathering said it is worrying and infinitely more painful to see the percentage of the nation’s workforce unemployed still high, particularly among the youth, and that the government under the leadership of H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo recognizes the pivotal role of the youth in national development. Therefore initiatives such as the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program, GEA’s Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment Program (YEEP) exemplify the commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial ecosystem, providing integrated support for young businesses to grow and succeed.

The Hon. Minister mentioned that the overreaching goal of the project is to instill an entrepreneurial mindset and attitude through capacity development, mentorship, coaching, access to markets, regulatory support, and start-up kits, therefore, the youth should take a keen interest in capacity building to establish themselves in profit business making and that no one will be left out through the support of the government of the Republic.

Madam Adam Christy Afisha, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Christy’s Favoured Clothing in Damongo of the west Gonja municipality, a beneficiary of the transformative power of the GEA and Master Card Foundation Young Africa project said the Young Africa Project provides a unique opportunity to turn vision into a reality and she has the privilege to train 14 apprentices with a grant of ghc20,000 which helped her to expand her business.

She added that the project introduced her to a series of trainings including Kaizen, financial literacy, small business management, and e-commerce.

She thanked the Ghana Enterprises Agency GEA’s and Master Card Foundation for the support and commitment and entreated the youth to take advantage of the Business in a Box project.

Article: The Irony of “Breaking the 8” in Ghana’s Prebendal Political State: A Foreseen Reality – By Ananpansah B. Abraham

0

Our beloved country, Ghana, finds itself on the brink of insolvency, rendering the once ubiquitous phrase “breaking the 8” increasingly stale. Even the president, often dubbed “the mother Serpent of corruption,” deviated from his usual rhetorics in a recent address to the nation on October 30, 2022. In a departure from his customary assurance of “breaking the 8,” he candidly acknowledged the dire economic state of the nation. He conceded that Ghana’s economy is in turmoil, with disrupted budgets, precarious balance of payments, and mounting debt, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

It’s worth noting that the repetitive mantra of “breaking the 8,” synonymous with the Nana Addo-Bawumiah-led New Patriotic Party government, was perceived as illusory by some from the outset. The prevailing sentiment foresaw the impending realities of the times.

Amidst the shattered hopes of breaking the eight-year electoral cycle, there is an elusive attempt to attribute our current economic woes solely to Post-Covid-19 setbacks and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, the pressing question remains: How did Ghana arrive at this juncture, or were we already on the path to self-destruction before the global crises hastened our descent?

Let me say without any fear of equivocation that Ghana didn’t get here by chance. Our country was already vulnerable before the twin global evils struck us unaware.

In fact, before the Covid-19 pandemic invaded us, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank through its Country Director, Frank Laporte, had already forewarned us about increasing our debt stock through fresh borrowing since our country was at a high risk of debt distress, but the government hardened its ears to any wise counsel and kept borrowing, while engaging itself in reckless expenditure to the startle rescue of today’s IMF. Ghana’s public debt suddenly rose from Ghc122 billion (56.9%) of GDP in 2016 to Ghc218.0 billion (63%) of GDP on the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019. The World Bank in its October 2022 Africa Pulse Report classified Ghana as a high debt distress country and projects the nation’s debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 104.6% by the end of 2022. Our budget deficit of 16% in 2020 was the second highest in Sub-Saharan Africa, far above the regional average of 6% from the data sourced.

Ghana’s trajectory towards a prebendal political state, characterized by the appropriation of state resources for personal gain, was evident long before the Covid-19 or Russia-Ukraine crises. “prebendalism” according to Richard Joseph is used to describe the appropriation of state offices — notably elected officials and government workers – and the diversion of their resources to serve themselves, their cronies and their ethnic and other identity groups.
Richard Joseph, thought to be the first person to use the term is the author of “Democracy and Prebendal Politics” — a book first published in 1987 and reissued by Cambridge University Press. The book chronicles the disorder, group conflicts and economic failings that resulted. The proliferation of ministerial appointments, exemplified by the bloated government under President Akufo-Addo, illustrates this phenomenon. Despite calls for prudence, the government persisted in its extravagance, prioritizing political patronage over fiscal responsibility.

In March 15, 2017, the president names 110 ministers, consisting of four deputy ministers and four new ministers of state.
At this point far beyond Covid-19, he had already set an ‘enviable record as the first head of state under the fourth Republic to have more than hundred ministers serve in his government. He had beaten his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama comfortably by 26 minister as the latter had a total of 84 ministers-deputies included.
Akuffo-Addo currently has about 125 elephant sized ministers.
President John Evans Attah Mills named 75 ministers after inheriting a legacy of 87 ministers in sum from John Agyekum Kuffour.

Arrogance further compounded the situation, as evidenced by the president’s adamant defense of his oversized government and resistance to downsizing. Even when calls for ministerial reshuffles intensified due to underperformance, the president remained obstinate, dismissing such demands as politically motivated. The president took to the media to mount a spirited defence at a media encounter at the Jubilee House on Friday, December 13,2019, by insisting that the government would have had it very difficult to achieve what it has done so far with a smaller number of ministers.
“The machinery of government in our country is such that if the political direction at the top is not strong, the delivery becomes an issue,” he said in fiece defense yet again of the size of his government.
“I still stand by the fact that the numbers were necessary for the work which we have done”, he responded.

In an interview on North Star radio in Tamale on Monday, August 8, 2022, the President said his appointees were outstanding and meeting his expectations, shooting down the expectations of Ghanaians for any resuffle.
“Many of them for me have done outstanding work. Their output has been considerable, and that is what I look at…
“If the output measures expectations, then I don’t have any strong reasons to heed the call,” the president said with astonishing bravado.

To the disappointment of many citizens, the president assumed that calls for a reshuffle sometimes have ulterior motives.
“The calls come for all kinds of reasons; NDC wanting to destabilize the government is one. There are people who are also looking for jobs.”

It is important to note that, president Akufo-Addo’s only ministerial reshuffle was during his first term, in August 2018, when he made some changes to his ministers and drop some portfolios following intense criticisms that his government was record time oversized.
He recently removed revoked the appointment of Sarah Adwoa Safo,Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, who had become visibly absent from work for an extended period.

However, with elections looming, the sudden reshuffle of 23 ministers appears more politically calculated than a genuine attempt at reform. To wit, this tactical maneuver, aimed at bolstering the integrity of his vice president and NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, belies the deeper governance deficiencies plaguing the administration.

As citizens of this beloved nation, our collective sorrow should not only stem from the current regime’s democratic regression but also from the looming threat of systemic collapse. Ghana, once a beacon of democracy in Africa, now risks succumbing to the perils of prebendalism. Urgent reform is imperative to steer the nation back on course towards accountable governance, austerity and sustainable development.

I shall be back to continue with this article with a forward looking introspection into the vision statement of Vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia which appears overly misleading, uninspiring; full of half truths and untruths. The vice president and head of the Economic Management Team in this “rehashed visioneles” statement played the role of Judas Iscariot clearly denying and distancing himself from the sinking record of his master. But will this attempt wash?

0

The Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency Hon. Samuel Abdulai Jinapor has challenged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for promising Ghanaians in their recent campaign message that they will run the country with a 24-hour economy if voted to power.

Speaking in Damongo of the Savannah region on Saturday February 17, 2024 during his acclimation and confirmation as the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Damongo, Jinapor said the NDC in four years subjected the country to erratic power (Dumso) making it difficult businesses to operate during the day.

“When they were in government, in the day tailors could not work, in the day there was no economy for welders, in the day there was no economy for carpenters, in the day there was no economy for mechanics, in the day there was no economy for thousands and hundreds and millions of Ghanaians. In the day, not even in the night, they couldn’t supply power, they couldn’t supply electricity”, Jinapor said.

Some few month ago as campaign hits up towards the December general elections. the Flagbearer and the 2024 presidential candidate for the opposition NDC, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama told Ghanaians that he will run the country with a 24-hour economy to ease the economic burden on Ghanaians if he is voted the president in the 2024 general elections.
This brought about controversies from their opponents, the ruling New Patriotic Party.

The challenge of power supply at the time according to the Damongo lawmaker, compelled many small scale businesses and enterprises to close down.

“Today this same people are now turning round to come and tell us that they will give us 24-hour economy. Even a day economy, even 12-hour economy you could not provide to Ghanaians when you were in government, how are you going to provide 24-hour economy.

Jinapor further however indicated that the contemporary economic preposition is the fourth revolution with the industrial revolution of the 18th Century, adding that other economic revolutions of the world today such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Digitization and Digitalization which is being practiced in some few countries including South Korea, Norway among others.

The man of action as he is well known by many, urged the people of the Savannah region to support him as the parliamentary candidate and Dr Bawumia as the presidential candidate to get to the next chapter that’s the Fourth Revolution of digitization in the the December elections to realize the digitization vision and to unleash prosperity to the Ghanaian people.
