NACOC Destroys Seized Narcotics in Savannah Region

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) conducted a public destruction of illicit drugs and illegal substances seized during recent operations in the Savannah Region, following the conviction of six individuals by the Damongo Circuit Court.

The seized narcotics were confiscated during joint enforcement operations conducted by the Ghana Police Service and NACOC, representing a significant step in ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region.

The Damongo Circuit Court handed down convictions to all six defendants, imposing fines of at least 500 penalty units on each individual.

Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe announced that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has stepped up anti-drug operations throughout the region, declaring a zero-tolerance policy toward illicit drug use.

“This represents just one component of the comprehensive campaign we have undertaken with utmost seriousness,” Be-Awuribe told media representatives. “We are pleased to see the courts imposing these sanctions and ordering the destruction of these harmful substances.”

Savannah Regional Commander of NACOC, Madam Rashida Ewuntomah, highlighted plans to establish district and municipal offices across the region as part of a broader strategy to strengthen drug enforcement capabilities.

“We anticipate this expansion will significantly improve our effectiveness and operational strength,” Ewuntomah explained. “The presence of officers in these districts will provide us with immediate intelligence and firsthand information. While we await these developments, we remain committed to our current efforts and will continue working diligently to bring offenders to justice.”

The drug destruction ceremony underscores the government’s commitment to eliminating the circulation of illegal substances and protecting communities from the harmful effects of drug trafficking and abuse.

NPP Savannah Regional Youth Wing Condemns Arrests and Detention of Fante Comedy, Yayra & Sir Obama Pokuase

0

The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Savannah Region has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as the unlawful arrest and detention of three individuals associated with the opposition party: Fante Comedy, Yayra, and Sir Obama Pokuase.

In a statement released Wednesday, NPP Savannah Regional Youth Organizer Raphael Mahama Akati characterized the arrests as “a reprehensible affront to the very foundations of our democracy” and accused national security operatives of engaging in “gangsterism styled” tactics against opposition members.

The statement comes during a period of national mourning following the tragic loss of eight public officials in a military helicopter crash. Akati criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he termed a “politically bizarre witch-hunting expedition” during this sensitive time.

“In this momentous occasion of national bereavement, one would’ve thought the NDC government will cease the opportunity to unite the nation not only in grief but on a national development journey,” Akati stated.

The youth leader demanded the immediate release of the three individuals currently in custody and called for an end to what the NPP describes as hostile treatment of opposition members. He contrasted the current administration’s approach with that of the previous NPP government under President Nana Akufo-Addo, praising the former administration’s repeal of criminal libel laws and commitment to free expression.

“We will not be silenced, we will not be deterred,” Akati declared, vowing continued advocacy for democratic principles and human rights.

The NPP youth wing has pledged to hold the current administration accountable for what it characterizes as abuse of power, with Akati stating that justice will be pursued “under the next NPP government.”

This development adds to ongoing political tensions in Ghana as opposition parties voice concerns about treatment of their members under the current administration.

For Immediate Release…

THE NPP SAVANNAH REGIONAL YOUTH WING CONDEMS THE SHAMEFUL ARRESTS AND DETENTION OF FANTE COMEDY, YAYRA & SIR OBAMA POKUASE.

Wednesday 13th August, 2025.

The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party in the Savannah Region is deeply alarmed by the rampant disregard for the rule of law and human rights evident in the gangsterism styled arrest of individuals associated with the opposition NPP in recent times. The arrests of Fante Comedy, Yayra and Sir Obama Pokuase is a reprehensible affront to the very foundations of our democracy. The actions of our National Security are not merely an abuse of power, they are a betrayal of the trust Ghanains placed in our institutions of state and a direct threat to the freedoms we hold dear.

In this momentous occasion of National bereavement; the pain and frustration of family, friends and the public on the tragic loss of 8 public officials involving a military helicopter crash, one would’ve thought the NDC government will cease the opportunity to unite the nation not only in grief but on a national development journey. Alas! They’ve chosen to triviliase the occasion and went straight back into the polarized and politically bizarre witch-hunting expedition.

As a youth leader, let it be on record on behalf of all Constituency Youth Organizers and the Youth in general condemns in the strongest possible term, the hostile arrest, intimidation and detention of NPP members by the NDC government; and demands the immediate release of the trio in the custody of national security operatives. The NPP is a law abiding organization and will only support lawful process of handling acts of citizens without abusing their right to freedom and human dignity enshrined in the constitution.

The erstwhile Nana Addo /Bawumia  government accepted criticism  and ensured a free and fair society devoid of infringement of citizens right to free expression; under the strongest provocation by the current crop of Ministers and CEOs throwing their weight around, President Akufo-Addo showed leadership as the man behind the repel of the libel law from a criminal to civil offence.

Finally! We’ll not be silenced, we will not be deterred. We’ll continue to speak out against injustice, to advocate for the rights of the marginalized and oppressed, and to demand that President Mahama uphold the principles of democracy and human dignity.

The current abuse of power by the NDC will not go unchecked, whether for political or personal gain; your actions will be held accountable and we’ll fight tirelessly to ensure that justice is served under the next NPP government.

………Signed……….
Raphael Mahama Akati.
[ NPP Youth Organizer, Savannah Region].

Damongo Residents Cry Out Over Skyrocketing House Rents

Landlords Charging Up to GHC 12,000 Annually for Single Rooms as Economic Hardship Mounts

Residents of Damongo are raising alarm over what they describe as exorbitant rental charges imposed by landlords, with some property owners demanding as much as GHC 12,000 per year for single-room self-contained apartments.

The mounting housing crisis has prompted desperate pleas from residents who say the astronomical rents are far beyond their economic capacity, particularly given the town’s limited commercial activity.

Speaking to Spear FM, frustrated residents painted a grim picture of the local housing market. Multiple tenants reported annual charges of GHC 6,000 for basic single-room accommodations, while others faced even steeper demands.

One resident shared her recent house-hunting experience, revealing how a landlord quoted her GHC 1,000 monthly rent—translating to GHC 12,000 annually—for a single room with basic amenities.

“This is completely unreasonable,” said the resident, who requested anonymity. “How can someone charge GHC 1,000 a month for just one room in Damongo? That’s GHC 12,000 a year, which is simply too much for ordinary people like us.”

The residents’ complaints center on a fundamental disconnect between Damongo’s economic profile and the rental prices being imposed. Unlike major commercial hubs, Damongo lacks the bustling business environment that might justify such steep accommodation costs.

“Damongo is not a commercial town, so business doesn’t move here as it does in other towns,” explained another resident interviewed by Spear FM. “Yet landlords are charging us as if we’re living in Accra or Kumasi. Where do they expect us to get this kind of money?”

The economic argument resonates throughout the community, where many residents work in agriculture, small-scale trading, or government positions with modest salaries that cannot accommodate such rental demands.

Faced with an increasingly dire housing situation, residents are appealing to higher authorities for immediate intervention. Their calls for help are directed at both the Ministry of Housing and local leadership in Damongo.

“We are calling on the Ministry of Housing and the leadership of Damongo to step in and address this sky-rocketing house rent situation,” said community representatives. “Something must be done before ordinary people are completely priced out of decent housing.”

The residents argue that without regulatory intervention, many families may be forced into substandard accommodations or pushed out of the area entirely, potentially disrupting the community’s social fabric.

The situation in Damongo reflects broader housing affordability challenges across Ghana, where rapid urbanization and limited housing supply have created pressure on rental markets. However, residents argue their case is particularly acute given the mismatch between local earning capacity and housing costs.

As the community awaits response from authorities, many residents continue to struggle with housing insecurity, caught between unaffordable rents and limited alternatives.

The calls for intervention highlight the need for comprehensive housing policies that consider local economic conditions and protect residents from exploitative practices in the rental market.

This story is based on resident complaints reported to Spear FM regarding housing rental costs in Damongo. Efforts to reach landlords and local housing officials for comment are ongoing.

Damongo Senior High School secures third place in Northern Zone of Energy Commission’s Renewable Energy Challenge

Damongo Senior High School (DASS) has qualified for the grand finale of the Energy Commission’s Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge Competition after placing third in the Northern Zone competition with their groundbreaking bio-plastic development project.

Students of Damongo SHS developed a recyclable system which converts food waste into biodegradable plastic materials for domestic and industrial use.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for the Savannah Region school, which competed against six other institutions in the Northern Zone, including Sunyani Senior High, Dabokpa Technical Institute, Kintampo Senior High, Bolgatanga Senior High, Ola Girls, and Walewale Senior High.

The Northern Zone competition concluded with Dabokpa Technical School claiming the championship position, followed by Ola Girls in second place, and DASS securing the crucial third position that guarantees advancement to the national finals.

The DASS students impressed judges with their innovative approach to developing bio-plastics using locally available materials, demonstrating both scientific rigor and environmental consciousness in addressing Ghana’s plastic waste challenges.

DASS will now join five other schools in the grand finale, representing both the Northern and Southern Zones. The Southern Zone qualifiers include Presec Legon (first place), Adidome Senior High School (second place), and Ahantaman Girls (third place).

This national representation showcases the widespread participation and high-quality innovations emerging from Ghana’s secondary education system.

The Energy Commission Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge represents a strategic partnership between the Energy Commission of Ghana and the Ghana Education Service, designed to cultivate interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency among second-cycle institution students.

The initiative serves multiple educational purposes, providing a comprehensive platform for students to engage with contemporary energy challenges while developing critical research and presentation skills.

The Challenge pursues four primary objectives that align with Ghana’s broader educational and environmental goals:

A distinctive feature of the Challenge is its emphasis on utilizing locally available materials for project development. This approach not only makes the competition accessible to schools across different regions but also encourages students to identify and leverage resources within their immediate environment.

The DASS bio-plastic project exemplifies this principle, demonstrating how students can address global environmental challenges using materials and knowledge available in their local context.

As DASS prepares for the grand finale, their qualification represents more than individual school achievement. It demonstrates the potential for innovative thinking and scientific excellence across Ghana’s educational system, regardless of geographic location or resource availability.

The upcoming national competition will provide a platform for the six qualifying schools to showcase their diverse approaches to renewable energy challenges, potentially inspiring policy directions and educational initiatives that could influence Ghana’s sustainable development trajectory.

The Energy Commission’s Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge continues to prove its value as both an educational tool and a mechanism for identifying promising young talent in Ghana’s emerging renewable energy sector.

UNDP Trains Northern Ghana Journalists on Conflict-Sensitive Reporting and Information Verification

0

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana has concluded a comprehensive two-day training program for journalists in Northern Ghana, focusing on conflict-sensitive reporting and information hygiene practices. The intensive workshop, held from July 28-30, 2025, at Modern City Hotel in Tamale, was funded by UNDP and Japan Government.

The training brought together media professionals from the Upper East, Savannah, and Upper West regions which are areas identified as potential conflict hotspots.

Mr. Eugene Yirbour, immediate past Acting Office Director of Democracy, Rights, and Governance at USAID and a conflict management specialist, emphasized the critical role journalists play in shaping public discourse.

“Whatever journalists report can either act as a potent bomb or serve to heal,” Yirbour stated during the session. He highlighted how journalists’ extensive reach influences both literate and illiterate audiences, making their responsibility for conflict-sensitive reporting paramount to fostering social cohesion and peace-building in Northern Ghana.

The training aimed to help journalists reshape narratives surrounding regional conflicts, many of which stem from misconceptions and misinformation that can exacerbate tensions.

Yirbour particularly stressed the importance of recognizing early warning signs of violent extremism in border communities, where journalists can play a crucial educational role in preventing the infiltration of extremist organizations.

Roselena Ahiable, Project Manager at DUBAWA West Africa, led sessions on fact-checking and information verification. She emphasized the importance of journalists adhering to in-house regulations to ensure truthful information dissemination, noting that while improvements have been made in the media landscape, continuous adaptation is necessary to address evolving challenges.

“As social media usage increases, so does the potential for misinformation,” Ahiable observed. She encouraged participants to share their fact-checking skills online, enabling audiences to internalize these practices across various social media platforms as part of a collective effort to promote credible information.

Kume Izumi, representing the Embassy of Japan in Ghana, praised the collaborative efforts of UNDP and its implementing partners, including the Ghana Journalists Association Northern Region Chapter, the Media Foundation for West Africa, and the National Media Commission.

Izumi highlighted the timeliness of the training, noting that journalism stands “at a fascinating crossroads” as AI-powered tools reshape news production. She warned that AI-generated content, often indistinguishable from authentic news, increases the speed and scale at which falsehoods can spread.

“As journalists and online bloggers, you bear the responsibility of being frontline actors against misinformation,” Izumi told participants. “I urge you all to take this training seriously and to use the skills you acquire as tools for preventing violence and promoting dialogue.”

She reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting capacity-building programs that strengthen peace and security in Ghana and the broader region, emphasizing the mutual respect and shared aspirations that define Japan-Ghana relations.

The training represents part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote responsible journalism in Ghana’s northern regions. By equipping journalists with conflict-sensitive reporting skills and fact-checking capabilities, the program aims to create a more informed public discourse and contribute to long-term peace and stability.

The initiative underscores the critical role of international cooperation in addressing contemporary challenges to media integrity and democratic governance, particularly in regions vulnerable to conflict and misinformation.
