Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Wa – West District.

A devastating rainstorm swept through the Wechiau -Bao and Sanuor communities  in the Wa -West District of the Upper West Region leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

The storm destroyed a good number of houses and caused extensive damage.

The heavy rainstorm also  brought down 8 high tension electricity poles, ripped off roofs, and severely damaged homes.

The area is currently plunged into darkness due to the destruction of power infrastructure.

The area, which is predominantly agricultural, saw farmers’ livelihoods destroyed in the storm. These farmers, already struggling due to the recent drought, now face the loss of crops such as maize, groundnuts and soybeans.

Without assistance, they will have nothing to sustain them in the short term.

Many of the affected residents are currently living in the open.

The residents have described the storm as intense, leaving chaos and widespread destruction behind. Many are left to pick up the pieces, counting their losses and assessing the damage.

The community’s Assembly member, Claudius Dare Kuuyoro, has appealed for help and support from the government and other agencies to assist those affected.

CEO Of Northern Development Authority Calls on Yagbonwura

The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer for the Northern Development Authority (NADA), Dr. Abeere-inga Emmanuel has called on the King and Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bikunutu Jewu Soale I.

The purpose of the courtesy call on the Yagbonwura was to inform him of his appointment as the acting CEO of NADA.

His visit to the Jakpa palace was to also seek the blessings and support of the overlord before he office begins work.

Speaking at the Palace, Dr. Abeere-inga appealed to the Yagbonwura to convey his appreciation to the president of the republic for finding him worthy of appointment.

In turn, the Yagbonwura thanked him for the visit and entreated him to work closely with the relevant stakeholders to accomplish the mandate of the authority.

He also asked him not to betray the confidence reposed in him by the president of the country by stampeding on the president’s vision.

The CEO was accompanied to the Japkpa Palace by the Director-Social Development, Mr. David Sule.

West Gonja MCE Nominee Overwhelmingly endorsed

The MCE nominee for the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, Yakubu Yussif Castro has been endorsed by members of the Assembly.

The confirmation ceremony took place at the Damongo Community Centre on Wednesday, April16 2025.

The nominee who needed two-thirds of the valid votes cast, secured 17 ‘Yes’ of the total 17 votes casted representing100% and surpassing the threshold of 12 ‘Yes’ votes needed.

His confirmation was marred by celebrations from party bigwigs and faithfuls, relatives and sympathizers.

In his acceptance speech, Hon. Castro thanked the president for the massive confidence reposed in him promising to work in the firm interest of the people of the Municipality.

He also expressed gratitude to the Assembly members for overwhelmingly endorsing his nomination as the MCE of the area.

Hon. Castro also pledged to work tirely to improve the sanitation of the Municipality.

He rallied the traditional authority to work closely with his office to enhance the wellbeing of the people.

Busunu Youth Take Stand on Land Dispute, Destroy Demarcation Pillars

In a dramatic turn of events, irate youth from Busunu in the West Gonja Municipality have destroyed pillars demarcating plots of land in the Soalepe community. According to an audio that went viral, the youth claim that the land belongs to the Busunuwura, and any transactions involving the land must be done through the right channels.

The youth expressed suspicion that someone, possibly a chief, is selling land without the knowledge or approval of the Busunuwura. They vowed to resist any attempts to claim or sell land belonging to the Busunu Traditional Area without proper documentation from the Busunuwura.

This development highlights ongoing tensions over land ownership and management in the region. The Busunu Traditional Area youth are determined to protect their land and ensure that any transactions are legitimate and transparent. The situation is being closely watched, and further developments are awaited.

Herdsmen Clash with Kabampe Farmers, One Arrested

A violent confrontation erupted between Fulani herdsmen and Kabampe farmers on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, resulting in the arrest of one farmer. The clash occurred in the bush near the farmers’ fields, where over 17 Fulani herdsmen wielding guns clashed with six farmers.

According to reports, the Fulani herdsmen had taken their cattle to graze near the farms, where the Kabampe people were planting yams. The farmers, upon hearing the sound of the cows, tracked them down and killed about five cows, bringing some of the meat back to their hut to prepare food. The Fulani herdsmen retaliated with gunfire, sparking a fierce exchange between the two groups.

The farmers managed to escape, leaving behind their motorbikes, but the Fulani herdsmen overpowered them and arrested one farmer, taking him and three motorbikes to the West Gonja Municipal Police Headquarters. The arrested farmer has been asked to reveal the names of his accomplices involved in killing the cows.

Background to the Conflict

This incident comes on the heels of resistance from the Kabampe community against their chief’s attempt to allow Fulani settlers on their land two months prior. The community expressed concerns that the presence of Fulani herdsmen would disrupt their farming activities, and vowed to attack any Fulani who brought cattle to their land.

Aftermath

The arrested farmer is set to appear in court on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the Damongo Circuit Court.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between herders and farmers in the region, often sparked by disputes over land use and resources. Similar clashes have been reported in neighboring Nigeria, where the conflict has led to significant loss of life and displacement.

DCE Nominee For North East Gonja Confirmed After Securing 100% endorsement

Abdul Mumin Ewuntomah has been overwhelmingly confirmed as the District Chief Executive for North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region after securing 16 ‘Yes’ votes of the total 16 votes casted representing one hundred percent (100%).

The confirmation process which drew support from all the 16 Assembly members was held at the premises of the District Assembly.

His confirmation was met with celebration from party faithfuls, relatives and stakeholders who thronged the venue to offer their support.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Ewuntomah expressed gratitude to the president of the republic for the opportunity to serve his people and called for unity.

He pledged to work closely with the traditional authority to foster tranquility in the area.

North Gonja DCE Nominee secures 100% endorsement

The District Chief Executive nominee for North Gonja, Abdulai Nashiru has secured a one hundred percent endorsement to become the DCE for the area.

Hon. Nashiru who needed two-thirds of the valid votes cast was able to garner 22 of the 22 valid votes cast representing 100%.

The confirmation process took place at the conference hall of the North Gonja District Assembly on Monday, April 14, 2024.

In an address after his overwhelming endorsement, he conveyed words of gratitude to the president for the confidence reposed in him whilst assuring that he will work assiduously to impress every Tom Dick and Harry.

Further, he pledged to work closely with relevant authorities to foster lasting unity in the District to ensure accelerated development.

He also called on constituents to burry their differences and rally behind him to bring sustainable approvement in every facet of the economy.

Breaking News: Central Gonja DCE Nominee gets landslide confirmation

The District Chief Executive nominee for the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region, Mahama Fuseini has been overwhelmingly confirmed as the DCE.

The confirmation process took place at the conference hall of the Central Gonja District Assembly on Monday, April 14, 2025.

The nominee needed a threshold of two-thirds (29) of the valid votes cast to be confirmed.

At the end of the polls, the nominee out of the 43 votes cast, secured 42 votes representing 97.67% with one person voting No representing 2.33% against his confirmation.

In his acceptance speech, Mahama Fuseini expressed appreciation to the president for deeming him fit for the office of District Chief Executive for the area.

Further, he thanked the Assembly members for the overwhelming endorsement he received from them.

He pledged to work tirelessly to maintain the prevailing peace being enjoyed by the people of the District.

Hon. Mahama also promised to confront the challenges head on to alleviate poverty in the area.

Abease Traditional Area “Hungry for Development” – Omanhene Appeals to Government

The Omanhene and President of the Abease Traditional Council, Obrenpong Kru-Takyi II, who also serves as the Vice President of the Bono East Region House of Chiefs, has made a passionate call for accelerated development in the Abease Traditional Area, declaring that the traditional area is “hungry for development”.

Speaking during a courtesy call paid by the Member of Parliament for Pru West Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni, the Omanhene expressed concern over the lack of critical infrastructure and social amenities in the area. He referenced promises made by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, during the 2024 general election campaign and his visit during the Kwabena festival, including the creation of a District Assembly for Abease, the construction of a modern market, and the transformation of the Abeaseman Day School into a fully equipped boarding facility.

“We thank God and our ancestors that His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama won massively. We hope he will fulfill the promises made to the chiefs and people of Abease. We are ready to partner with government to ensure the development of this traditional area,” Obrenpong Kru-Takyi II stated.

He assured the MP of his commitment to work closely with him and the incoming District Chief Executive to facilitate progress. “My doors are always open. You can call on me at any time for advice and direction,” the Omanhene emphasized.

Obrenpong Kru-Takyi II also highlighted the availability of vast arable lands within the traditional area and encouraged the MP to attract investors to boost agriculture and reduce youth unemployment. He lauded the government for continuing work on the Abease road project, which was initiated by the previous administration, and urged the MP to regularly remind the President of his pledges to the community.

In response, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni expressed his gratitude to the chiefs and people of Abease for their unwavering support during the 2024 elections. “I am here to say thank you and to reaffirm my commitment to delivering on the promises I made to you,” he said.

The MP also used the occasion to seek the blessings of the traditional leadership and formally introduced Hon. Samuel Agyapong, the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive for Pru West. He noted that the confirmation of the nominee is scheduled for Tuesday 15th April 2025, and appealed for prayers and support from the traditional authorities to ensure a smooth confirmation process.

“We are committed to ensuring Abease receives its fair share of the national cake under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama,” Hon. Ntekuni assured. To conclude the visit, the Omanhene directed the Gyaasehene to offer prayers for the MP, the DCE nominee, and the current government, asking for divine guidance and success in all their endeavours.
